190,000 hours of volunteer service are provided by our senior volunteers annually.
Volunteer
We are currently in primary need of individual volunteer tutors for our Adult Literacy Program. Volunteers must be 18 years of age, have good communication skills, complete a 12-hour training and commit to tutor at least 3 months.
Volunteers are needed primarily Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers can make their own schedule between this time frame, as we match students with volunteers who have compatible schedules. The 12-hour training required is conducted monthly on 2 consecutive Saturdays (6 hours each time) by Literacy Works, a training agency that is a Hull House collaborative partner. Check out the Adult Literacy webpage for more information, or contact Joanne Jones at (773) 493-1306 for more information about volunteering at the Parkway Community Center.
Contact Jeanie Pittman at (312) 235-5353 to volunteer as a tutor for the FamilyWorks program. See the FamilyWorks webpage for more information about site locations.
Please consider volunteering at the Lincoln Square and Uptown Family Literacy Program as a tutor. We ask you commit to 4 hours per week (twice a week for two hours), be able to communicate in Spanish and willing to tutor adult English Language Learners. If you are interested please contact Francisco Villalvazo at (773) 561-3500x-214.
We also have opportunities for large groups of volunteers. Please contact Mark Tisdahl if you are interested in having your company or organization volunteer.
If you are a senior (55+ years of age) please consider opportunities in our Retired and Senior Volunteer program (RSVP). Volunteer opportunities can be ongoing or short-term/on an emergency basis, and trainings are provided by RSVP sites. Please contact Jeff Nelson at (312) 235-5359 for more information.
