Adult Literacy
The Adult Literacy program provides courses in math, reading, and writing for adults 16 years of age and older. These courses assist adult students to become independent, competent and confident to enhance future employment opportunities.
We provide one-on-one adult literacy tutoring for 120 adults with low literacy levels below the 9th grade level as identified by the SORT test. In our Parkway Community House, we have provided these critical literacy services for more than 18 years to adult learners in Chicago’s South Side communities of Woodlawn, Englewood, Greater Grand Crossing, South Shore and Washington Park. Recently, we made a strategic decision to expand the reach of these critical services to target the client populations of the Association’s Economic Development Unit. (Workforce Development, Service Connector, and Small Business Development Center) and has the overall purpose to increase the economic self-sufficiency of low-income adult populations through the provision of supportive case management services.
Services target the following adult populations:
- Female headed householders on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- Adult residents of Chicago Public Housing
- Unemployed and under-employed low-income adults
- City College students
- Residents within the Chicago communities served by our 3 locations
