WHO we are
Founded in 1889, the Jane Addams Hull House Association is one of Chicago’s largest non-profit social service agencies. We are dedicated to helping people build better lives for themselves and their families. We take a community-focused approach to solving social problems by advancing the goal of “neighbors helping neighbors.”
WHAT we do
As one of Chicago’s oldest social service agencies, we serve approximately 60,000 individuals, families and community members from economically, culturally and geographically diverse backgrounds. Our 50 programs operate in 43 program sites throughout the Chicagoland area.
For children: Infant & toddler programs, preschool and after school programs, early literacy initiatives
For youth: Community schools, abstinence education, transitional and independent living programs
For families: Family literacy, parenting classes, community technology centers, domestic violence counseling and advocacy programs
For adults: Business development initiatives, adult literacy, job training, technology programs
For seniors: Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, home-delivered meals, recreation and companionship
For the future: Our research initiatives and the public policy agenda of our Center for Civil Society launches informative and hands-on responses to the challenges facing communities nationwide.
WHEN we succeed
We succeed when our clients succeed. Please read this sampling of recent success stories – a mere 3 of the hundreds we encounter daily. You can find more in-depth success stories on our Success Stories page.
- In Uptown, a woman with three children receives domestic violence counseling at our Women’s Counseling Center. Her 6-year-old son’s teacher referred the family to the Center based on the son’s troublesome behavior. Resistant at first, the mother is now a participant after viewing the progress demonstrated by her son.
- In Garfield Ridge, a single mother with two young children seeks employment. However, it is a fruitless search, as she lacks training and basic job skills. Through our Service Connector program, she receives much needed job readiness training. In addition, her children are active participants in our after school programs and our technology center.
- In the suburban area of Justice, Illinois, a 7-year-old girl has just been referred to our Children’s Advocacy Center by the local police due to allegations of sexual abuse. A victim sensitive interview, which is sensitive to the girl’s needs and developmental level, is soon conducted in the Center’s warm and caring environment. Upon completion, the Center will provide counseling, crisis intervention and support groups to the entire family.
